چکیده

We discuss the opacity in the core regions of active galactic nuclei observed with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), and describe a new method for deriving the frequencydependent shifts of the VLBI core from the frequency-dependent time lags of flares observed with single-dish observations. Application of the method to the core shifts of the quasar 3C 345 shows a very good agreement between the core shifts directly measured from VLBI observations and derived from flares in the total flux density using the proposed method. The frequency-dependent time lags of flares can be used to derive physical parameters of the jets, such as distance from the VLBI core to the base of the jet and the magnetic fields in the core region. Our estimates for 3C 345 indicate core magnetic fields 0.1 G and magnetic field at 1 pc 0.4 G.

Ultracompact jets in active galactic nuclei

We study the properties of ultracompact jets in several prominent radio sources (Cygnus A, 3C 309.1, 3C 345, 3C 395, 4C 39.25, and 1038+528A), using the frequency dependence of observed position of the optically thick jet core. Frequency dependent offsets of the core positions are used for calculating the luminosities, magnetic fields, and geometrical properties of the jets. Opacity effects are...

The core shift measurements for two-sided jets affected by Free-Free absorp- tion using VLBA

A radio core represents the peak of intensity in VLBI images and is located at the base of jets. It appears at different positions depending on frequencies. This is known as “core shift”, caused by absorption of the core emission. The position of the central engine in an AGN can be estimated accurately by measuring the core shift with multifrequency and phase-referencing observations. We observ...

Multi-frequency Polarization Studies of AGN Jets

Throughout most of the history of radio interferometry studies of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) using VLBI, attempts to extract physically meaningful information from VLBI observations have been dominated by visibility-based approaches to analysis, such as model fitting of the self-calibrated visibility data. This approach has been extremely valuable in multi-epoch studies of superluminal motion...

A high-frequency radio survey of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei

We investigate the high-frequency radio spectra of twenty low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) with compact radio cores. Our millimetre survey with the Nobeyama Millimetre Array (NMA) and analyses of submillimetre archival data that had been obtained with the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) reveal the following properties. ...
